During the school year 2012–13, the pilot project ‘Het Smaakparadijs’ has been organized in the ‘Vrije Basisschool Gelrode’. The 180 pupils (nursery and primary school) have had the opportunity to discover the flavors in the region around the school (regional products in the large meaning). Moreover, they have discovered ‘fair’ (basic) food, learned how to cook it and even how to grow vegetables in the school garden.
The aim is to further develop the school’s pilot project and to obtain a scenario ‘Onze school: een Smaakparadijs!’ [Our school: a paradise of flavors]. This scenario will serve as a source of inspiration and manual for other schools wanting to launch a similar project in the Hageland. In the school year in which this pilot project has been running, trainee teachers of the KH Leuven have been working on this theme during their traineeship. This way, they provided a part of the contents for the scenario with a.o. elaborated course contents. This project intends to organize activities in and around the school according to the theme of the ‘paradise of flavors’, to write a scenario, to publish a cook book for children as well as a gardening book for schools and to organize a festive final event.
