109 COMMEMORATION OF THE BATTLE OF HOEGAARDEN 29 SEPTEMBER 2013Hoegaarden
In October 2013, it will be exactly 1.000 years ago that the Battle of Hoegaarden took place. A unique opportunity to commemorate the battle! Never before has there been a millennium commemoration of a battle in Belgium.
Usually, the commemoration of historic battles consists of a combination of the following elements: the raising of a commemoration monument, a historic evocation (re-enactment), a temporary exhibition, the publication of a book and an academic lecture.
Although this project will also contain some of these ‘typical’ elements, with a.o. a medieval banquet and a scientific study, the local population’s participation is being emphasized. Indeed, Hoegaarden offers everyone the opportunity to challenge another person during the months preceding the commemoration day, in a ‘duel’. The middle class will be actively involved. Local schools will also be asked to provide teaching packages.
