75 ELDERLY FRIENDLY KORTENAKEN

Kortenaken

In the light of the European year of Active Ageing, the Public Centre for Social Welfare of Kortenaken wants to offer the best quality of life for its senior citizens, as it is obvious that we will soon be confronted with a "grey tsunami" rather than a "grey wave". Moreover, Kortenaken regards this generation as very valuable and wants to make its rural community attractive to live in for these people. Kortenaken wants the elderly to really participate in the community, rather than simply offering the possibility of a monthly coffee at the senior's club. Instead Kortenaken prefers to offer them a custom size array of activities and services.

  1. Firstly, the local authorities (community, Public Centre for Social Welfare, police,...) have to learn how to communicate with this age group.
  2. Efforts will be made to do away with the taboos and negative stereotypes that surround old age.
  3. The Public Centre for Social Welfare of Kortenaken will also try to make people aware of several ailments that affect the elderly.
  4. One of the most important triggers for elderly to move to a home is a fall. Therefore, the Public Centre for Social Welfare of Kortenaken wants to launch a campaign to help prevent falls.
  5. In 2012, Kortenaken will start with the construction of a sports centre. Kortenaken wants to take this opportunity to consider the needs of the senior citizens and take them into account in this project. For example, exercise machines designed for the elderly will be placed in the sports centre.
